Why are Business Checks SO much more EXPENSIVE than Personal Checks?

Can someone please tell me why business checks are so much more expensive than regular checks?  I googled “business checks” and clicked on the link of the first organic search result.  The lowest price for general purpose, one-part, 3-on-a-page business checks was $32.40 for 300.  The lowest price for personal checks was $21.90 for two boxes of blue classic checks.  Yes, this is a very, very small sample size and your mileage may vary; however, take a look at any site that sells online checks.  The business checks are significantly more expensive than the personal checks.  And… there are often coupons and/or deals for personal checks, while I have yet to find a coupon or deal for business checks.

  1. I don’t know that I have a good answer for that, and as someone that prints business checks, you would think I would. However, if you look around, a lot of things are more expensive for business use. For example, a lot of software is free for personal use, but for business you have to pay. Internet connections, even comparable ones to personal, are more. Business travel, business class on airplanes, etc.

So while it does not justify the ‘why’, I think it is fairly common that business’s get charged more for certain things than personal users.

  2. Thanks for the feedback, Greg. You’re absolutely right. Many goods and services are more expensive for business use (as compared to the same goods and services for personal use).

  3. Can you use personal style checks for a small business?

  4. Heather – I don’t see why not. Check manufacturers do offer different features for personal checks and “business” checks. Some business checks include multiple signature lines, additional security features, etc. If you don’t need those features, why not use a “personal” check format for your business?

  5. I’ve always wondered why they are more expensive, too.

I guess the check printers feel that since business checks are a tax write-off they may as well charge a little more?

I’ve found that instead of reordering from the same check printer, you can save money by switching printers. Printers often offer discounts to first time customers.
